Philip,

This group only provides support for phone line modems,
which use drivers quite distinct from cable modems.

I suspect that if you upgrade to current kernel with its USB interfaces support,
your cable modem will be automatic.  You could use a Ubuntu Marverick
install CD in demo mode.
If typically auto- recognizes cable modems
