I'm trying to setup the dialer and ran into the following problem: 

First, I ran modprobe, martian modem, and wvdial and it seemed to identify the modem port okay.  

Next, I tried setting up the dialer with $ sudo nano /etc/wvdial.conf 
and added ISP information.  

Lastly, I tried to dial using
$ sudo wvdial 

I got the message 
"cannot open /dev/ttysmo: no such file or directory"
