``i retried installing, and now i cant compile the
modem drivers. my kernal version now says 2.6.32-24-generic instead
of 2.6.32.-21-generic.''

Can you please post your error messages?

What you got when you ran

$ make all
$ sudo make install
$ sudo modprobe martian_dev
$ sudo martian_modem

Then opening other terminal, and attempt to connect

$ sudo wvdial

Thanks,

Antonio
