What does
$ sudo ls /dev/ttyUSB0 -l
show or
$ sudo ls /dev/ttyUSB* -l

$ sudo lsusb
$ sudo dmesg | grep 'usb'

and depending on your modem (3G ) additional software might be needed?
 usbmodeswitch?

Install usbmodeswitch and see if that helps?
