Luca,

There are problems under 2.6.31 kernels with slamr support of
Smartlink chipsets like your:
Modem: Smart Link Ltd. LM-I56N "
CLASS=0703
PCIDEV=2003:8800

On a 2.6.30 Slackware system dialout was OK,
 but under 2.6.31 there is a persisting error:
No Carrier

Was dialout and/or fax working under any earlier kernel?
