I remember someone was testing slamr in karmic (which has a release 
candidate of kernel 2.6.31) had the same issue [1], but I wasn't able to 
find out if this problem is related to:

* his specific modem (I had a similar issue yet with ALSA driver, and 
  turned out that it is because the specific modem I had, and a patch to 
  sl-modem solved it)
* wether the new version of sl-modem had a regression
* wether the problem is because of new kernel.

Unfortunately the bug reporter paniced & seems to have given up.

I don't get this message when I compile sl-modem under karmic (which has 
a release candidate of kernel 2.6.31).
