Re: Fw: IBM Thinkpad iSeries 1200 running Xubuntu 8.04 - modem help required.

Hello all

Firstly I would like to say a big THANK YOU for getting me connected to the web.

I've just got a few other questions.
As you might not know, I'm configuring the laptop for a female friend.

1. Is wvdial the only way to connect to the web or is there a more user friendly way?
1.1 If it's configured another way, will wvdial still work?

2. I've noted if I disconnect the wvdial dialup session (CTRL + C), I get (modem not found) msg when trying to reconnect later using wvdial.
I've overcome this by conducting the following:

sudo
/etc/init.d/sl-modem-daemon stop
aneta@ubuntu:~/Desktop/SLMODEMD.gcc4.2$
sudo modprobe -r snd-intel8x0m
aneta@ubuntu:~/Desktop/SLMODEMD.gcc4.2$ sudo modprobe snd-intel8x0m
aneta@ubuntu:~/Desktop/SLMODEMD.gcc4.2$ sudo slmodemd -c AUSTRALIA --alsa modem:1
sudo wvdial

Or I just simply reboot the laptop......is this normal?

Thanks again for your help.....I've worked on this problem for months before seeking help on forums & now your site.

Rick
