Dan,

Detach all USB devices before rebooting into Linux.
Then rerun scanModem.
A change is needed in :
ACPI: PCI interrupt for device 0000:00:01.6 disabled
before the modem can function.

The martian_dev driver is useless for:

don't load it, as it might interferre

From
http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/packages/smartlink/
get the SLMODEMD.gcc4.1.tar.gz
It has a newer slmodemd than the one installed by the sl-modem-daemon package.
$ slmodemd --version
should report 2.9.11

Once your modem is enabled at bootup, it should be detected by:
$ su root
# wvdialconf  /etc/wvdial.conf
