Download from http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/packages/smartlink/
 the package SLMODEMD_gcc4.2_alsa1.0.17.tar.gz having a compiled
slmodemd. Unpack under Linux with:
     $ tar zxf SLMODEMD_gcc4.2_alsa1.0.17.tar.gz
 and read instructions therein.

But briefly, the modem is setup with command:
     sudo slmodemd -c USA --alsa modem:1
 reporting dynamic creation of ports:
    /dev/ttySL0 --> /dev/pts/N   , with N some number
 Read DOCs/Smartlink.txt and Modem/DOCs/YourSystem.txt for follow
through guidance.

Since the sl-modem-daemon package is already installed upon your
System, the setup is done automatically on boot. After boot you can
do
$ sudo  /etc/init.s/sl-modem-daemon restart

Then check the version with:
$ sudo slmodemd  --version
which should report 2.9.11

Check for existence of the expected ports with:
$ ls -l /dev/ttySL0   /dev/pts/*

If present, the modem should be found by:
$ sudo wvdial.conf  /etc/wvdial.conf

Edit in personal information with:
$ sudo gedit   /etc/wvdial.conf
removing  the symbols  ; < >
 and adding a line:
Carrier Check  =  no

Then try to dialout with:
$ sudo wvdial
