Dante,
RE:jordan@sprite:~/Software/SLMODEMD.gcc4.2$ sudo slmodemd -c USA --alsa hw:0,6error: mixer setup: load hw:0 error: No such file or directorySmartLink Soft Modem: version 2.9.11 Aug 3 2008 21:41:20symbolic link `/dev/ttySL0' -> `/dev/pts/3' created.modem `hw:0,6' created. TTY is `/dev/pts/3'Use `/dev/ttySL0' as modem device, Ctrl+C for termination.------------Just acknowledging that this is a real problem, particularly sinceyour modem was working previously.
Please install the package libalsa2-dev , which is needed forcompiling slmodemd on your own System. If not on your install CD, youcan get it from http://packages.ubuntu.com/hardy/libasound2-devand install with:$ sudo dpkg -i lib*.deb
>From http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/packages/smartlink/get the slmodem-2.9.11-20080817.tar.gz and unpackMove into modem/ subfolder:$ cd modem$ make clean$ make SUPPORT_ALSA=1will compile a slmodemd
$ sudo mv /usr/sbin/slmodemd /usr/sbin/slmodemd.old$ sudo cp slmodemd /usr/sbin/slmodemdNow all is version matched in ALSA code as much as possible.
Retest the modem.
It there is a failure, return the output of$ find /lib/modules/ -name snd-hda-intel.koUbuntu for a while had its own snd-hda-intel.ko and that may be the problem.
Do you have an alternate ethernet/wireless CONNECT with which to do upgrades?

Thanks to the excellent guidance I received from you a couple of years ago, I've been happily using my intel-chipset (ALSA) linmodem on SuSE 10.2 on a daily basis - and having just decided to take the plunge and upgrade to Ubuntu 8.04, I made it my top priority to get my linmodem drivers up and running again on the new installation. Just to be safe, I downloaded and ran the ScanModem script, which told me that I needed exactly the same driver I had used on the old system (surprise). Once I downloaded and installed the newest version of the pre-compiled slmodemd program, however, I was dismayed to find that an error I had never seen before now appeared every time I tried to run slmodemd. And when I tried to dial out in spite of the error, wvdial promptly and unfailingly exited with a "NO DIALTONE" message. (See attachment for details)>> Additional info:> Appending X3 to the init code didn't help; in fact, having "listened in" on my computer while it was ostensibly dialing out (by picking up the phone), I can tell you that it didn't seem like the modem was actually communicating with the phone line at all (I didn't hear anything but a dialtone),>> Just for fun, I tried reloading the ALSA drivers - only to be told that the particular component slmodemd apparently depends on (snd-hda-intel) couldn't be unloaded.
