Re: No Carrier problem with Smartlink Modem

Thank you Jayjwa and Antonio for your help!

I read the smartlinks were well suported and I must admit it has been a bit of work and patience. However, no licence fee so that's one plus!

I figured since it was dropping my call before I received a login prompt, and from your suggestions to try a different init string. I am using AT&F +MS=34 and it seems to be very reliable.

Also even with my HSFmodem I would have problems with it disconnecting in WVdial as it would try different authentication methods.. since I am using PAP I set my /etc/ppp/options file to:

refuse-chap
refuse-mschap
refuse-mschap-v2

Now, WVdial connects very efficiently. I will have to change my other computer to this too as I find wvdial/gnome PPP more informative since it tells you connect speed and time a little more easily then checking through the logs each time. Thank you so much.

Just one last question, is there anyway to have this modem work as a regular user? I have tried adding myself to the slmodemd group, and chmod changes and everytime I boot it gives me a permission denied error! If there is anyway that can be fixed... then I would be all set to go!

Thank you everyone for your help and your group is a real asset to the linux community!

John
