Bob,

For candidate card in slot 00:03.0, firmware information and bootup
diagnostics are:
 PCI slot	PCI ID SubsystemID	Name
 ----------	---------	---------	--------------
 00:03.0	10b9:5457	10cf:1130	Modem: ALi Corporation M5457 AC'97 Modem Controller

 The PCI slot 00:03.0 of the modem card may be disabled early in
 a bootup process,
 --- Bootup diagnostics for card in PCI slot 00:03.0 ----
[   23.941490] ACPI: PCI Interrupt 0000:00:03.0[A] -> Link [LNKG] ->
GSI 11 (level, low) -> IRQ 11
[ 23.941512] ACPI: PCI interrupt for device 0000:00:03.0 disabled

Possibly there are too many external devices attached:
-----------------------------------------------------------
 Modem interrupt assignment and sharing:
 11:      90705    XT-PIC-XT        ohci1394, ohci_hcd:usb1,
ohci_hcd:usb2, ehci_hcd:usb3, yenta, yenta, yenta, yenta, ALI 5451,
radeon@pci:0000:01:05.0, eth0
---------------------------------------------------------
Please detached external devices as much as possible, including the
PCMCIA slot devices. Then rerun scanModem
