Thank you for your response and information. I feel like seeing light at the end of the tunnel
I followed your instruction and I am able to bring up minicom and issue AT commands to modem. Especially I am able to issue

ATDT2141234567

to dial out

Here are still my problems and questions:
1.  What is slamr? I don't have it in my system, do I need it?

2. I am still unable to get caller ID to show up from the modem. This is what I did:
    AT#CID=1
    Then called in from my cell phone and I do have caller ID service from the phone company, all my telephones in the house did show caller ID from my cell phone's call

3.  How can I make my modem to do voice function? I remember the following command set the modem to voice mode:
    AT#CLS=8

    or inquire what mode it is in

    AT#CLS?

    But they all returned "ERROR" May be I need a list of AT command for this modem driver!
