Hi,

I do not see a modem in your system, however, since you seem to have a Lenovo/Thinkpad machine and you have a HDA sound device, I suspect that the HDA bus installed on your system doesn't properly detect the HDA modem, this is a known problem in alsa-driver.

To solve this issue, please install alsa-driver-linuxant available at:

http://www.linuxant.com/alsa-driver/

You will also have to use this command:

---
sudo echo "options snd-hda-intel probe_mask=3" > /etc/modprobe.d/fix-alsa
---

before installing alsa-driver-linuxant as a workaround for the known problem:

https://bugtrack.alsa-project.org/alsa-bug/view.php?id=3981

in alsa-driver.

Dear Support (Jonathan):

I followed MarvS's directions below - rebooted, tried wvdial again - and still got the same error. So I generated the attached hsfdiag.txt.
Can you help?

Thomas,

Please send to the List, not direct to me as I am rarely
online.
Try once more after a reboot.
$ sudo wvdial

  If still failure
$ hsfconfig --help
$ sudo hsfconfig --dumpdiag
which write to the /tmp/ folder. Send the output to:
"Support
(Jonathan)" <support@xxxxxxxxxxxx>,

Dear MarvS:

You have been super helpful so far, thank you very
much. I finally got all the way through your original
instructions, that is to say the following instructions:
"From
http://www.linuxant.com/drivers/hsf/full/downloads-ubuntu-x86.php
download
hsfmodem-7.68.00.12full_k2.6.24_16_generic_ubuntu_i386.deb.zip
Under Linux unpack with:
$ unzip hsfmodem*.zip
Then install with:
$ sudo dpkg -i hsfmodem*.deb
Subsequently, the modem should be found with
$ sudo wvdialconf /etc/wvdial.conf
Edit in your personal information with:
$ sudo gedit /etc/wvdial.conf
and try dialing out with:
$ sudo wvdial.
See DOCs/Testing.txt  for details."

Everything worked fine until I run the last command,
"sudo wvdial", it gives me the following error
message:
"--> WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.60
--> Cannot open /dev/modem: Input/output
error"
Again, forgive me being so lost, but I don't know
to do about this. Can you please help again? Thank you

Thomas,

Just use any dialer utility your Linux Distro
provides.
But use its setup component before you try a full
dialout.

Thank you for all your help so far, but
please help me
just a little bit more.
I gave up on that installer (dldrinstall.run)
and went
back to the second suggestion in your original
message to
me. I was able to download the hsfmodem*.deb
package,
install it, and configure it using wvdial.conf.
But again,
I am stuck at the very last step - wvdial.
doesn't work.
When I try to run it, I get the message
"command not
found". I searched my file system, and
can't find
it on my computer.
The other instruction I was not able to
follow was
reading DOCs/Testing.txt and DOCs/Conexant.txt. I
can't
find either one on my computer, Linuxant, or
Linmodem.
(As you can tell from all this, I am far from
expert
and very lost. Please bear with me. Also, I have
internet
access even as I try to install the dialup modem.
I have
intermittent access to a wireless router, and only
work on
this when I have access.)

It is a file not URL I think, as
127.0.0.1  always
refer to
your own PC.
On my Ubuntu system, there is in
/etc/hosts
127.0.0.1     localhost

Thomas,

Excuse me but I am not intelligent
enough to
understand what you mean by: "I
downloaded the installer".
Which installer is this
"THE", you
did not
say, and I cannot guess.
Is it the file
"hsfmodem-7.68.00.12x86_64full.tar.gz"
which Marv
told you to
download, or the Linuxant crap named
"cnxtinstall.run" ?
Installing
hsfmodem-7.68.00.12x86_64full.tar.gz does
not require any
browser, it just requires to read
the
instructions for
installation using
method C in the
"Installation" page
linked
from the HSF menu on the left
side of page
http://www.linuxant.com/drivers.
cnxtinstall.run does use a browser
but Marv
did not
tell you to use it, and
I name that "installer"
crap
because it
makes things more complicated than
the straight method and because it
requires
that you
already have a working
connection (LAN, ADSL, other modem)
because
it
downloads material from the
Linuxant site, which is of course
not
possible when
you just have a modem
still not working (the hen and the
eggs, you
know...)
I have asked Linuxant several times
to remove
it. No
effect.

Tom,

For support under your
x86_64 System
from
http://www.linuxant.com/drivers/hsf/full/downloads.php
 get the

hsfmodem-7.68.00.12x86_64full.tar.gz
unpack under Linux with:
$ tar zxf hsf*.tar.gz
and follow the instructions
in the
new
hsfmodem-7.68.00.12x86_64full folder
You could also install a 32
bit
linux-image
package,
matching
KernelVersion with one of
the
packages on

http://www.linuxant.com/drivers/hsf/full/downloads-ubuntu-x86.php,
which have precompiled
drivers.
below are more typical
Bioler Plate
instructions. The most
expert help
for Linuxant software is
through
"Support
(Jonathan)"

<support@xxxxxxxxxxxx>.  But
first
run the
$ sudo hsfconfig --diagnose
and send him the output
written to
the /tmp/
folder
