A quick but temporary fix is to get from
http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/packages/ltmodem/11c11040/
agrsm_howto.txt   and
 linux-image-2.6.21.0-22_2.6.21.0-22_i386.deb
which includes agrmodem+agrserial drivers already

Install with:
$ sudo dpkg -i linux*.deb
Reboot under the new 2.6.21.0-22
and test following agrsm_howto.txt

We can work on a permanant solution for newer kernels later.
