Eric,

The modem has a Lucent/Agere/LSI Mars or Apollo DSP (digital signal
processing) chipset.
Support packages for 2.6.n kernels are at:
 http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/packages/ltmodem/kernel-2.6/martian/

Get the latest martian driver
martian-full-20080625.tar.gz

http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/packages/ltmodem/kernel-2.6/martian/martian-full-20080625.tar.gz

$ tar -zxvf martian-full-20080625.tar.gz
$ cd martian-full-20080625/
$ make all
$ su
password
# make install

For automation you may do as root user
# cd scripts
# ./automate.sh*
will set up the martian modem to automatically run when booting up.
# exit

$ su -
password
# modprobe martian_dev
# martian_modem

Fire up another terminal or tab session
become root again
$ su -
password:

# wvdialconf /etc/wvdial.conf

should find the modem port which by default will be /dev/ttySM0

edit wvdial.conf by adding your ISP's phone number , your username, password, add a line Carrier Check = no and Stupid Mode = 1. You may comment put "#' or a ";" in front of Stupid Mode = 1, this will depend on your ISP and if it connects without it.

an example of wvdial.conf follows:

# cat /etc/wvdial.conf

[Dialer Defaults]
Init2 = ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
Modem Type = Analog Modem
Phone = 7072000
ISDN = 0
Username = your_usernaem_to_connect_to_your_ISP
Init1 = ATZ
Password = your_password_goes_here
Modem = /dev/ttySM0
Baud = 460800
Carrier Check = no
Stupid Mode = yes
; AutoDNS = yes

Regards,

Antonio
