Add the following line to the /etc/wvdial.conf  file
Carrier Check  =   no
This is necessary for modems using /dev/pts/N  ports, which are not
yet sound competent.

The fitrst generation slamr was the driver for your modem hardware
under 2.4 kernels.  But there has now been a split in the code.

Your hardware is now preferentially served by ALSA modem driver snd-intel8x0m
plus the non-driver slmodemd, which has most of the COMM capabilties.

slamr can however compete for the modem hardware inappropriately.
Thus it should not be loaded
