Hi all, I have been using slmodem-2.9.11-20051101 for years on a Fedora Core 2 system. Since I got plenty of good advice that I should upgrade, I finally installed Ubuntu 7.10 ...... I only could get an antiquated sl-modem-daemon_2.9.10+2.9.9d+e-pre2-5ubuntu4_i386.deb. I know from before that I need 2.9.11 to access my usual ISP which requires slmodem option -ringdetector. I could not connect even to a normal ISP anyway with the above package. So I uninstalled it, though the snd-via82xx-modem module is still loaded at startup I don't know how. Now I just would preferably if possible forget about this alsa driver whose configuration seems so complicated, and that I could not get to work anyway and only use slmodemd like I did before. The README in slmodem-2.9.11-20080417 specifies that alsa drivers are not mandatory, and even that slamr is more stable and has more features. I could not compile slmodem-2.9.11-20051101 on linux 2.6.22-14-generic that comes with Ubuntu 7.10 but slmodem-2.9.11-20080417 compiled like a breeze. Everything looks OK in ModemData.txt doesn't it ? But then I cannot keep a connection, even to a normal ISP without -ringdetector. - Using wvdial I may get "no dialtone", "no carrier", or else ppp loads and then dies after a few minutes (no response to 4 echo requests) of an extremely slow connection at best. I tried playing with some options in wvdial.conf, it did not help. - /dev/slamr? get erased from time to time - even /dev/modem gets erased - I noticed that /dev/ttySL0 points to new /dev/pts/? each time I run slmodemd. Thanks in advance for any help, and congratulations to the authors of this very helpful site. It is such a bore when you have to log out and start WindowsTM just to access the internet. PS I am in Italy, using Teleconomy Internet as ISP, in case someone knows about it. For martian_modem, additional required packages are libc6-dev (and for Debian/Ubuntu, linux-libc-dev). The also required headers of package libc6 are commonly installed by default. Compiling hsfmodem drivers does require linux-libc-dev and libc6-dev packages, for kernels 2.6.24 and later versions. In not included on your install CD, search for them at http://packages.ubuntu.com or comparable Repository for other Linux distros. When compiling ALSA drivers, the utility "patch" will also be needed. If a driver compilation fails, with message including some lack of some FileName.h (stdio.h for example), then Some additional kernel-header files need installation to /usr/include. The minimal additional packages are libc6-dev and any of its dependents, under Ubuntu linux-libc-dev If an alternate ethernet connection is available, $ apt-get update $ apt-get -s install linux-kernel-devel will install needed packages.
