Re: JByrne, USA kernel 2.6.20-16-generic

Thanks for your guidance on my attempt to convert my winmodem to a
linmodem. My Logitech device was indeed a USB mouse, but I disconnected
it anyway (and switched to touchpad) to see if mouse was causing the
resource conflict at bootup. Also, I did try 3 of the suggested fixes in
Booting.txt (unloading.gz, "pci=routeirq", and "pollirq" [couldn't find
any way in BIOS to change IRQ assignments or change to a non-Windows OS]).

None of these attempted fixes made any difference. Whenever I run the
command "sudo slmodemd -c USA --alsa modem:1" I get the same error
message:

   "error: mixer setup: attach hw:1 error: No such device
ALSA lib pcm.c:2145:(snd_pcm_open_noupdate)
Unknown PCM cards.pcm.modem
error: alsa setup: cannot open playback device 'modem:1': No such file or
directory error: cannot setup device 'modem:1""

No doubt your suggestion to install Hardy first was a good idea. Last
year I spent an enormous amount of time getting peripherals to work with
Edgy and Feisty, so I was hoping to upgrade rather than starting over with
a clean install. Most of the problems appear to have been resolved by the
recent releases, so should be easier now. Ordering the Hardy CD will be
my next step. Thanks for your help.

Your primary problem is:
[ 45.356923] ACPI: PCI interrupt for device 0000:00:06.1 disabled
that is the bootup diagnostics are shutting down the modem card
because of some resource conflict. This has to be cured before the
will be success with the standard:
--------
 Download from http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/packages/smartlink/
 the package SLMODEMD.gcc4.1.tar.gz having a compiled slmodemd. Unpack
under Linux with:
       $ tar zxf SLMODEMD.gcc4.1.tar.gz
 and read instructions therein. But briefly, the modem is setup with command:
       sudo slmodemd -c YOUR_COUNTRY --alsa modem:1
 reporting dynamic creation of ports:
       /dev/ttySL0 --> /dev/pts/N   , with N some number
 Read Smartlink.txt and Modem/YourSystem.txt for follow through guidance.
-------
Your 2.6.20 kernel is fairly old now.
You might be better served installing the new Hardy release with 2.6.24
kernels,
which might itself cure the problem.

But read Bootup.txt about options you could try with the current kernel.

What is
 ID 046d:c03d Logitech, Inc.
if not an essential for services (like a mouse) please detach it.
That may free up resources on IRQ/interrupt
18:          2   IO-APIC-fasteoi   ehci_hcd:usb3
tha the modem needs.

Do
$ dmesg > dmesg.txt
and attach the dmesg.txt in your next report to us.
