You are right.
Your modem is not supported under any Linux system with a kernel of the
2.6.x series.
US Robotics / 3Com does not supply the information needed to dream of
building a driver nor the core of a driver which many other
manufacturers supply.
You have to buy an other modem, carefully chosen to be compatible: easy
and cheap on a desktop, less easy and more expensive for a laptop.
Read InfoGeneral.txt in the directory where you found ModemData.txt
about alternatives.
