John, I've identified the source of the snd-hda-intel ungrade problem, though a solution may not be feasible. If you run: $ find /lib/modules/`uname -r` -name snd-hda*.ko ls /lib/modules/2.6.22-14-generic/ubuntu/media/snd-hda-intel/snd-hda-intel.ko While the standard position used for ALSA modules is: $ ls /lib/modules/2.6.22-14-generic/kernel/sound/pci/ ac97 cs5535audio mixart snd-ad1889.ko snd-azt3328.ko snd-ens1371.ko snd-intel8x0m.ko snd-via82xx.ko ali5451 echoaudio nm256 snd-als300.ko snd-bt87x.ko snd-es1938.ko snd-maestro3.ko snd-via82xx-modem.ko au88x0 emu10k1 pcxhr snd-als4000.ko snd-cmipci.ko snd-es1968.ko snd-rme32.ko trident ca0106 ice1712 riptide snd-atiixp.ko snd-cs4281.ko snd-fm801.ko snd-rme96.ko vx222 cs46xx korg1212 rme9652 snd-atiixp-modem.ko snd-ens1370.ko snd-intel8x0.ko snd-sonicvibes.ko ymfpci Even doing the compile with ALSA 1.0.14 sources, the generated snd-hda-intel (which installs to /lib/modules/2.6.22-14-generic/kernel/sound/pci/ ) has symbol errors during an attempted install into the kernel. That is Ubunut has done some code modifications for the modules under /lib/modules/2.6.22-14-generic/ubuntu/ to render them compatible with their standard 2.6.22-14-generic kernel, whereas the drivers compiled from "raw" ALSA resources are NOT!!! This is my your attempted updates to t0 1.0,15 and .16, and my 1.0.14 test fail to load. I haven't had time to figure out a work around to this problem as yet. Aside from this problem, what you have been technically doing is OK. But updating the Gutsy snd-hda-intel may not be feasible, short of an installation of the new/deve/oping Hardy release.
