  Class 0780: 1106:3068 Communication controller: VIA Technologies,
Inc. AC'97 Modem Controller
      Primary PCI_id  1106:3068
    Subsystem PCI_id  1584:4005
    Softmodem codec or chipset from diagnostics: SIL22, a Smartlink type
                               from Archives: SIL22, a Smartlink type

 Download from http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/packages/smartlink/
 the package SLMODEMD.gcc4.1.tar.gz having a compiled slmodemd. Unpack
under Linux with:
 	$ tar zxf SLMODEMD.gcc4.1.tar.gz
 and read instructions therein. And slmodemd info with:
       $ slmodemd  --help
 But briefly, the modem is setup with command:
 	sudo slmodemd -c ITALY --alsa modem:1
 reporting dynamic creation of ports:
	/dev/ttySL0 --> /dev/pts/N   , with N some number
 Read Smartlink.txt and Modem/YourSystem.txt for follow through guidance.

Read the wvdial.txt sample for adaptations that may be needed in Italy.

I have the same modem. Occassionally the driver has to be revived by unloading
$ sudo modprobe -r  snd-via82xx-modem
and reloading:
$ sudo modprobe  snd-via82xx-modem
