What I did
1 - I used ScanModem; the ModemData.txt is further down in this message
2 - For some reason, it was impossible to reach linuxant.com last week; I tought the site closed 3 - ScanModem produced a file: Conexant.txt; ModemData.txt suggested to read Conexant.txt 4 - In Conexant.txt, it refers to: hsfmodem_7.60.00.06oem_i386.deb at support.dell.com 5 - I downloaded and installed: hsfmodem_7.60.00.06oem_i386.deb or hsfmodem_7.60.00.18oem_i386.deb
6 - I believe I installed hsfmodem_7.60.00.06oem_i386.deb
6.1 - upon receiving an answer on discuss@linmodems March 9th, I uninstalled hsfmodem 6.2 - as directed I downloaded: hsfmodem_7.68.00.07full_k2.6.22_14_generic_ubuntu_i386.deb.zip
6.3 - and installed it
7 - my wvdial.conf is:

To help you, we need to do what you did!
According to what you sent you should have taken the Linuxant HSF driver
matching your kernel and Linux distribution.
Is THAT what you did?
Open http://www.linuxant.com/drivers
Read the section marked HSF of the menus on the left side.
Download:
-if you have some other working communication such as ADSL, use the tool
linked as cnxtinstall.run , then everything runs automatically if you
follow the instructions.
-otherwise, following link driver download page through Linux
distributions -> Ubuntu (last in table), click, download the file
hsfmodem_7.68.00.07full_k2.6.22_14_generic_ubuntu_i386.deb.zip
Copy it anywhere convenient to you in your Linux space (your login
account, for example).
Decompress by typing the command  unzip hsf  and hit the TAB key and
only then, Enter. TAB extends the file to its full name, no need to sweat.
Install with
rpm -i hsf and TAB then RETURN
Let it go.
That's it.

For owners of a Dell PCs with Conexant HSF modems, a driver source package
with full speed enabled is available, but requires driver compiling. Read
Conexant.txt
The hsfmodem package serves a great variety of Conexant chipset modems.
