Steve,

 For martian_modem under Ubuntu Feisty, additional required packages
are linux-libc-dev & libc6-dev
Download them through http://packages.ubuntu.com if they are not on
your install CD.
Once both in your Linux partition, Co-install them with:
$ sudo dpkg -i li*.deb

>From At http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/packages/ltmodem/kernel-2.6/martian/
   get the martian-full-20071011.tar.gz . Unpack under Linux with:
$ tar zxf mar*.tar.gz
Read the documantation in the unpacked folder. Then
$ make clean
$ make
$ sudo make install
will compile and install martian_modem and the driver martian_dev

Load the driver with:
$ sudo modprobe martian_dev
Get used to martian_modem usage with:
$ sudo martian_modem --help
