Josef
Josef,

Class 0703: 8086:24d6 Modem: Intel Corporation 82801EB/ER
     Primary PCI_id  8086:24d6
can host several alternate modem chips in the Subsytem
   Subsystem PCI_id  1558:0800
has codec SIL22, a Smartlink type.
The modem driver is the snd-intel8x0m, but most of the COMM brains is
provided by a slmodemd utililty acting through it

Download from http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/packages/smartlink/
 the package SLMODEMD.gcc4.2.tar.gz having a compiled slmodemd. Unpack
under Mandiva Linux with:
    $ tar zxf SLMODEMD.gcc4.2.tar.gz
 and read instructions therein. But briefly, the modem is setup with commands:
$ su - root
#  slmodemd -c SOUTHAFRICA --alsa modem:1
 reporting dynamic creation of ports:
   /dev/ttySL0 --> /dev/pts/N   , with N some number
 Read Smartlink.txt and Modem/YourSystem.txt for follow through guidance.
