well, this pci modem/ubuntu 7.10 is now working
using sudo wvdial Gnome PPP connects and returns local IP but dropped
out almost immediately
after configuring Stupid Mode = on , in $HOME/.wvdial.conf
a stable connection from sudo wvdial is obtained.
With these settings however, Gnome PPP would return a local IP
address, but would drop immediately.
By setting Gnome PPP options:
ignore terminal strings (stupid mode): checked
Check carrier line: unchecked
Gnome PPP now also connects ok.
Now to get this sorted for the intended (non admin) users...
