Steve,

   See Jacques comment below.  From
http://www.linuxant.com/drivers/hsf/full/downloads-ubuntu-x86.php
get the
	hsfmodem_7.68.00.04full_k2.6.22_14_generic_ubuntu_i386.deb.zip
under Linux:
$ unzip hsf*.zip
start the install with:
$ sudo dpkg -i hsf *.deb

If all is well the modem should be found by:
$ sudo wvdialconf  /etc/wvdial.conf
through a reboot might be necessary.

If the modem is thus found, edit in personal info with:
$ sudo gedit  /etc/wvdial.conf
deleting the ; and replacing the <xxx> with your personal info.
THen try a dial out with:
$ sudo wvdial

Report back at this point.

MarvS

Marv,

This particular Riptide modem is supported by the HSF driver according
to the Linuxant RIPTIDE submenu.
I agree that the line says that the Riptide driver can optionally be
installed and that the Riptide driver is not supported under 2.6 kernels.
I believe however that the modem does work as modem with the appropriate
  kernel, while the sound is lost.
I prefer however to leave you the decision to inform Steve because I may
be wrong.
It would anyway be a good idea, I believe, to asl him to try, so that we
will know for sure - but again you may know something not clearly
explicited on the Linuxant site.

Jacques
