Mike

Class 0780: 11c1:0480 Communication controller: Agere Systems Venus Modem
     Primary PCI_id  11c1:0480
 Support type needed or chipset: Agere.Venus_serial_drivers

should be trouble free, using the Linux serial drivers.
$ sudo wvdialconf  /etc/wvdial.conf
should find the modem.

Edit in your personal infor with:
$ sudo gedit  /etc/wvdial.conf

Do
$ ifconfig
Shut down any ethernet or wireless channels with commands like
$ sudo ifconfig eth0 down
Check with
$ ifconfig
These other channels would block ppp0 DNS

Then dialout with
$ sudo wvdial
