=== Finished modem firmware and bootup diagnostics
section. ===
=== Next deducing cogent software ===

8086:2668 is a High Definition Audio card, possibly
hosting a soft modem.
Bootup diagnostics lack ALSA data.

The HDA modem codec file is:
/proc/asound/card0/codec#1
-----------------------------------
Codec: Conexant ID 2bfa
Address: 1
Vendor Id: 0x14f12bfa
Subsystem Id: 0x20030003
Revision Id: 0x90000

The audio card hosts a softmodem chip with Vendor ID:
 0x14f12bfa

14f1 is the Conexant Vendor ID, and 0x14f12bfa a
softmodem chipset.

For candidate modem in PCI bus: 00:1b.0
Class 0403: 8086:2668 Audio device: Intel
Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW

                              from Archives:

Lacking a dsp (digital signal processing) chip, the
modem is a software
intensive or "softmodem" type. Its primary controller
manages the traffic
with the CPU. But the software needed is specified in
the Subsystem.
 -----------------------------------------
Support type needed or chipset:	hsfmodem

The diagnostic outputs for this softmodem section have
their raw information in
folders and text files under /proc/asound/ which you
can browse. The information
is from files:

For owners of a Dell PCs, a generic package with full
speed enable is available. See
http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/bigarch/archive-seventh/msg01830.html
for details.

Freeware support is also available for a few Conexant
chipset modems
with support confirmed only for the PCI_id chipset
14f1:2f00.
 See http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=180632

Otherwise formal support for Conexant chipset modems
are available ONLY through
 http://www.linuxant.com/drivers. Read Conexant.txt
for details.
and Modem/YourSystem.txt for follow through guidance.
 Driver speed is limited to
14,400 until a key is purchased. There is NO
freeware alternative.
There are two support package types: hsfmodem and
hcflinmodem.

http://www.lorenzobettini.it/linux/LinuxSonyVaioVGN-S5VP_B
reports a
problem and solution in stalling a key, after testing
of the free low
 speed download.

The hsfmodem package serves a great variety of
Conexant chipset modems.
 Start at http://www.linuxant.com/drivers/hsf for
 eventually download of a hsfmodem-SomeVersion.zip
package with
 SomeVersion containing your kernel_version
2.6.18.8.tex5 in the filename if possible.
These packages have compiled drivers. Otherwise
download the generic
 hsfmodem-Version.tar.gz package. Its usage will
require compiling.
For owners of a Dell PCs, a generic package with full
speed enable is available. See
http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/bigarch/archive-seventh/msg01830.html
for details.

Writing Conexant.txt

 Completed candidate modem analyses.

The base of the UDEV device file system is:
/dev/.udev
/dev/.udevdb

Versions adequately match for the compiler installed:
4.1.1
and the compiler used in kernel assembly:
4.1.1

Kernel-header resources needed for compiling are not
manifestly ready!

If compiling is necessary packages must be installed,
providing:
	 kernel-source-2.6.18.8.tex5

If a driver compilation files with message including
some lack of some FileName.h (stdio.h for example.
Some additional kernel-header files need installation
to /usr/include.
For Debian/Ubuntu related distributions, run the
following command to display the needed package list:
$ sudo apt-get -s install linux-kernel-devel
While some of the files may be on the install CD,
others may have to be found through
http://packages.ubuntu.com

For Ubunut feisty, additional packages required were:
 build-essential curl debhelper dpkg-dev g++ g++-4.1
gettext git-core gitk
 html2text intltool-debian kernel-package kernel-wedge
libc6-dev
 libcurl3-gnutls libdigest-sha1-perl liberror-perl
libstdc++6-4.1-dev
 linux-libc-dev po-debconf rcs tcl8.4 tk8.4

Checking pppd properties:
	-rwsr-xr-t 1 root root 304536 Nov 7 2006
/usr/sbin/pppd

In case of an "error 17" "serial loopback" problem,
see:

http://phep2.technion.ac.il/linmodems/archive-sixth/msg02637.html

To enable dialout without Root permission do:
$ su - root (not for Ubuntu)
         chmod a+x /usr/sbin/pppd
or under Ubuntu related Linuxes
	 chmod a+x /usr/sbin/pppd

Checking settings of:	/etc/ppp/options

In case of a message like:
   Warning: Could not modify /etc/ppp/pap-secrets:
Permission denied
see
http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/bigarch/archive-sixth/msg04656.html

Don't worry about the following, it is for the
experts
 should trouble shooting be necessary.
