Hello,

Summary: have run 'scanmodem', don't know what to do
next.
=====================================================
Recently bought a refurbished Dell Latitude D610 with
XP on it, and then installed Ubuntu from a Linux
users' group CD. Installation and operation of Ubuntu,
no problem. Ubuntu is new to me.

My other home PC has Knoppix/Debian and uses a
softmodem with a Conexant driver over a 56KB dialup
line, for Internet connectivity. Took me a few hours
to get that all set up but after that, no
driver-behavior problems in more than a year. No other
Linux experience apart from these 2 systems.

Now I wish to begin using the built in dialup modem in
this laptop under Ubuntu. (Have not used it under
Windoze and don't want to!) Yes I know there is a
wireless capability in this system, but for the time
being I can only use it at home, where I have only
56KB land line dialup capability.

As a first step I got scanmodem and ran it. It looks
like maybe the next step is providing its
ModemData.txt and dmesg.txt output files (included,
below) here, and asking for help.

Based on my reading of information at
www.linuxant.com, it appears that the (Intel
82801-based) modem in my laptop system is not
supportible with a Conexant driver. But, I may be
wrong about that, --please let me know; I know how to
get and install a Conexant driver already, if there is
one that would work.

I am a bit concerned about the fact that 'scanmodem'
reported 'CodecFiles not found' at the end of its
report. Is this a problem?

Don't know how to determine whether there is already a
modem driver in the system (as part of Ubuntu),
versus, do I need to acquire an executable, versus, do
I need to acquire and compile source code, in order to
have a usable modem driver for Ubuntu?

What do I need to read or do next?

Thanks,
Steve
