Start with:
---------------
 Download from http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/packages/smartlink/
     $ tar zxf SLMODEMD.-1.0.13.tar.gz
 and read instructions therein. But briefly, the modem is setup with command:
       sudo slmodemd -c ITALY --alsa hw:0,6
 reporting dynamic creation of ports:
       /dev/ttySL0 --> /dev/pts/N   , with N some number
 Read Smartlink.txt and Modem/YourSystem.txt for follow through guidance.
--------------------
and test.
Are you comfortable with compiling?
On your new Gutsy installation, it might be better to use a slmodemd
compiled with ALSA version 1.0.14rc4 resources.
You first need to install the package libasound2-dev
Read the instructions in Smartlink.txt for compiling an ALSA competent slmodemd
