Claudio,
I am on travel with no time to read former mails.
Please excuse me if this has already been written.
If you are using wvdial to call your ISP, have you got a line
Carrier Check = no
in file /etc/wvdial.conf ?

I've tried with patched slmodemd. Now it can dial: after this command
slmodemd -c ITALY --alsa modem --debug
I can use minicom on /dev/ttyS0
Any dial command stop with "NO DIALTONE" error.
If I use ATX3 command I can dial (I can make ringing my GSM phone) but
if I try with my isp number I've got a lot of error (on slmodemd) and
a final NO CARRIER: this is last part of debug output

Ruben,
Wait for feedback from the other HDA+modem testers.
Just in case the failure is specific to your particular
ALC880 Analog hardware,
rather than a continuing slmodemd failure
