Re: PPP daemon dies when trying to dial out - fixed

Hi

The short of it is that the problem was with the ISPs I was trying to use - I must have just stumbled across a few bad ones in a row and as a consequence thought it was my modem malfunctioning.

======

I first tried a few of the no-sign-up ISPs that stated that they were linux compatible / specifically for linux use - I think the problem I had with them was maybe
that the slmodem / slamr was interfering with the linuxant driver,
or perhaps the ISPs were just very busy? I'm not sure.

I then tried UK free software network pay-as-you-go dialup - this is where I ran into the problem of pppd dying. As it turns out pppd wasn't getting the response it expected from the ISP, and so terminated - so nothing wrong with pppd.

As a consequence, to anyone in the UK I certainly wouldn't recommend UK free software network dialup.

Thanks for your help,
LS

Luke,

First of all, your modem works and the problem is with the way pppd tries to start, not with the modem, and not with the hardware.

I do not know if this will help, because many independent situations can create SIGNAL 15 seen in the pppd log (signal 16 issued by wvdial simple means, go into pppd log to see why).

Try once by disabling New PPPD in wvdial.conf (just add ; at the beginning of the line)
Likewise, try activating
Stupid Mode = yes
first with New PPPD then without it.

If all that fails, edit /etc/ppp/options
You probably will not see a line asyncmap because the asyncmap default is zero.
If my guess is right, add this line and try again:
asyncmap FFFFFFFF (that is 8 times the letter F).

And let us know the result

Hi

Here is the wvdial.conf .
As to the ppp log, I did edit out my username and replace it with "user", which I have also done with wvdial.conf.

Thanks

Luke,
Would you please:
1 copy /etc/wvdial.conf to wvdial.txt
2 edit wvdial.txt to remove or hide your password (make it ZZZZ for example)
3 send us the so edited wvdial.txt

Indeed the ppp log shows an attempt to logon as "user"
Is that the username given to you by your ISP?
With the file wvdial.txt I can possibly help you, but make sure to hide your password before sending it out.

Hi

I installed the linuxant hfs driver for my connexant modem but am now having problems when trying to dial out - I've been trying with both wvdial and also kppp. The typical sort of *basic* error message I was getting with kppp was like this:

Couldn't find interface ppp0: No such device

when I looked at /var/log/messages I saw that pppd kept dying for some reason (see attached varlogmessages.txt).

One weird thing I noticed is that pppd terminated with a signal 16 on wvdial and a signal 15 on kppp.
Otherwise the problems with both of them seemed similar to me.

I have attached the kppp generated bugfile (PPP-logfile2.txt), the wvdial log file (wvdial-logfile.txt) and also relevant sections from /var/log/messages (varlogmessages.txt).

What could be going wrong with pppd?

Thanks,
Luke S
