So, for me, that begs the question: how do I use the modem in i386
emulation mode?  At present the concept is foreign to me (but always
open to learn)!

The primary problem is that the Smartlink modem sector has been sold
to Conexant, and they are not doing updates.  In particular, the
modem_main.o was never compiled for the x86_64 architecture.  So your
only hope is to use the modem in i386 architecture emulation mode.
