Archival information is that

 PCI slot PCI ID SubsystemID Name
 ----------     ---------       ---------       --------------
 00:02.6      1039:7013    1025:0083       Modem: Silicon Integrated

has an AgereSystems chip in the 1025:0083 Subsystem. with codec SIL2f
Is there any reason for believing that your System has a Conexant chip.

I gave Farell bad advice. I first told him that he needed SLMODEMD
and then I saw the following from linuxant site

SIS AC-Link Controller
# PCI ID 1039:7013

MC97 modems from other manufacturers may appear under the AC-Link
Controller PCI IDs above, but this driver only supports Conexant
devices.

HSF Modem driver
http://www.linuxant.com/drivers/hsf/index.php?PHPSESSID=c6b54f1d1290d940ebf824f61d761a45

and it has the same PCI ID and I told him/advised him to forget about
SLMODEMD and get the hsfdriver from linuxant. So please forgive
Farrell and blame me for screwing up the matters. From experience and
seeing the Sis details I figured out that it would be supported by
SLMODEMD, but then I saw that hsf linuxant driver had that PCI ID,
then it would be the driver needed. So Farrell got confused due to
the bad advice I gave him and he was unsure since you said Antonio is
correct in his advice and he did not know if it was the first mail or
the second which advised him to get the hsfmodem from linuxant.

Sorry to all for the confusion.

Antonio

Please uninstall the hsfmodem package as it can interfere with the
alternative support.

Then  Download from http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/packages/smartlink/
 the package SLMODEMD-1.0.13.tar.gz having a compiled slmodemd. Unpack under Lin
ux with:
        $ tar zxf SLMODEMD-1.0.13.tar.gz
 and read instructions therein. But briefly, the modem is setup with command:
        sudo slmodemd -c YOUR_COUNTRY --alsa modem:1
 reporting dynamic creation of ports:
        /dev/ttySL0 --> /dev/pts/N   , with N some number
 Read Smartlink.txt therein
