Unable to use Scanmodem while using Live Ubuntu

Hi

Was wanting to test the winmodem of an HP Compaq X 1000 Presario
Notebook , currently running Win XP. So i booted using a Live Ubuntu
6.10 (Edgy) CD and attached a pen (flash) drive with scanModem loaded on.

Using the normal procedure i ran scanModem
a. It did not seem to complete the scan and gave this error message

b. And the following is the output of Modemdata.txt

 Only plain text email is forwarded by the  DISCUSS@xxxxxxxxxxxxx List
Server.
 Do use the following as the email Subject Line:
           SomeName, YourCountry Ubuntu 6.10  kernel 2.6.17-10-generic
 This will alert cogent experts, and  distinguish cases in the Archives.
 YourCountry will enable Country Code guidance.
 Occassionally responses are blocked by an Internet Provider mail filters.
 So in a day, also check the Archived responses at
http://www.linmodems.org .

Is there something else i need to do to be able to run scanModem and get
 an output. I ran scanModem with SUDO and the result was the same.

Would apprciate your advice.
