Hi,
lately, reports of sound problems are very low with the HSF driver. We
try to upgrade frequently the ALSA part of the HSF driver to prevent as
much as possible these problems.
Alan should check with a mixer program that the sound is not muted or
not too low, it could be the source of the problem. If the sound problem
persist, hopefully a new version of the HSF driver with updated ALSA
code will solve the problem in the future. In this case, uninstalling
the driver with 'sudo hsfconfig --uninstall' and a reboot of the machine
can be used as a workaround for this problem.

next time I restarted my notebook I was informed by Ubuntu that there
were new Restricted Drivers in use. The new driver was the Conexant
modem engine so I decided to see if indeed the modem was now working.
Gnome PPPD detected the modem as /dev/ttySHSF0 but the connection failed
with the warning "Could not modify /etc/ppp/pap-secrets: Permission
denied". The log file is attached. I changed the permissions (sudo chmod
a+rw /etc/ppp/pap-secrets) and tried again and this time with success.
So the good news is the modem works. The bad news is that sound doesn't
work any more.
