Please help with winmodem in Acer Aspire 3682WXMi laptop
(bought in the Netherlands) running SuSE Linux 10.2.
I ran scanModem script and following ModemData.txt (attached)
I downloaded and unpacked SLMODEMD-1.0.13.tar.gz and put
slmodemd in /usr/sbin.
Command
slmodemd -c NETHERLANDS --alsa hw:0,6
gives
SmartLink Soft Modem: version 2.9.11 May 5 2007 01:31:04
symbolic link `/dev/ttySL0' -> `/dev/pts/3' created.
modem `hw:0,6' created. TTY is `/dev/pts/3'
Use `/dev/ttySL0' as modem device, Ctrl+C for termination.
But /dev/pts/ has only 0 and 1 Chr Devs and /dev has no ttySL0.
YaST / Network Devices / Modem does not detect any modem.

Lacking a dsp (digital signal processing) chip, the modem is a software
intensive or "softmodem" type. Its primary controller manages the traffic
with the CPU. But the software needed is specified in the Subsystem.

provides Low Level support enabling contact with the modem hardware.

Download from http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/packages/smartlink/
the package SLMODEMD-1.0.13.tar.gz having a compiled slmodemd. Unpack under Linux with:
$ tar zxf SLMODEMD-1.0.13.tar.gz
and read instructions therein. But briefly, the modem is setup with command:
slmodemd -c YOUR_COUNTRY --alsa hw:0,6
reporting dynamic creation of ports:
/dev/ttySL0 --> /dev/pts/N , with N some number
Read Smartlink.txt and Modem/YourSystem.txt for follow through guidance.
