MarvS,
Thanks for replying. I know nothing about Linux, and less about Suse.
How do I compile? Where do I get these packages you speak of? Are they
like Windows .exe files in which I only have to click on them or is
there something more complex involved? Thanks
Ken

PS Suse agrees that it is an Agere modem, but the wvdialer doesn't see
it at all and wvmodem.conf seems to be referencing something called a
serial port modem. My XP machine has no serial ports.

compiling is necessary packages must be installed, providing:
      gcc-4.1 kernel-source-2.6.16.13-4-default

Then follow the instructions in AgereDSP.txt

Hi. My SUSE 10.1 doesn't see my XP's Winmodem. It's a Lucent Agere as
the ModemData.txt file shows. How does one fix this?

The modem has a supported Lucent/Agere Mars or Apollo DSP (digital
signal
processing) chipset. Support packages for 2.6.n kernels are at:

 See AgereDSP.txt for Details.

Vendor 11c1 is Lucent Technologies with modem technology now under
LSI Inc.
Their Linux code developer/maintainer is Soumyendu Sarkar. Support
for a chipset and its
continued maintenance is only initiated at the request of a major
chipset buyer,
or comparable sponsor. Several different modem chipset types are
produced:
 with varying support under Linux.

There has only been one reported success for 11c1:048c, 11c1:048f and

modems working.

The base of the UDEV device file system is: /dev/.udev

The kernel was compiled with gcc version 4.1.0 and a compiler is not
installed

Kernel-header resources needed for compiling are not manifestly ready!

If compiling is necessary packages must be installed, providing:

Checking pppd properties:
        -rwxr-xr-x 1 root dialout 291796 2006-04-22 22:38 /usr/sbin/pppd

In case of an "error 17" "serial loopback" problem, see:
    http://phep2.technion.ac.il/linmodems/archive-sixth/msg02637.html

To enable dialout without Root permission do:
$ su - root (not for Ubuntu)
         chmod a+x /usr/sbin/pppd
or under Ubuntu related Linuxes
         chmod a+x /usr/sbin/pppd

In case of a message like:
Warning: Could not modify /etc/ppp/pap-secrets: Permission denied
see http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/bigarch/archive-sixth/msg04656.html

Read Modem/YourSystem.txt concerning other COMM channels: eth0
Which can interfere with Browser naviagation.

Don't worry about the following, it is for the experts
 should trouble shooting be necessary.
