A major problem with the Conexant softmodem chips are that they are not compliant with the AC'97 standards for softmodem controllers. If your extended group is interested in some other softmodem needs, there are outstanding problems with Motorola and soft AgereSystems/LSI soft modems where good COMM code skills are could aid.
