Alternatively, since you're using Ubuntu, you can install slmodemd from the
Ubuntu repositories :

$ sudo apt-get install sl-modem-daemon

OR, if you have no internet connection on that machine, download the deb file
from

http://packages.ubuntu.com/edgy/misc/sl-modem-daemon

copy it to the machine - on an USB stick for example - and do (assuming you
copied the file on your desktop) :

$ sudo dpkg -i ~/Desktop/sl-modem-daemon_2.9.10+2.9.9d+e-pre2-5build1_i386.deb

Then you need to edit the configuration file :

$ sudo nano -w /etc/default/sl-modem-daemon

and restart the daemon :

$ sudo /etc/init.d/sl-modem-daemon restart

wvdial should then detect your modem :

$ sudo wvdialconf /etc/wvdial.conf

Good luck
