Alicia,

For your CPU=i686, Ubuntu 6.10, Linux version 2.6.15-23-386
The modem
     Primary PCI_id  8086:24d6
   Subsystem PCI_id  1179:0001
   Softmodem codec or Vendor from diagnostics:
                             from Archives: SIL27, an AgereSystems type.

SHould be supported through:
Download from http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/packages/smartlink/
the package SLMODEMD.gcc4.1.tar.gz having a compiled slmodemd. Unpack under Lin
ux with:
       $ tar zxf SLMODEMD.gcc4.tar.gz
and read instructions therein. But briefly, the modem is setup with command:
      sudo modprobe -r snd-intel8x0m
      sudo modprobe  snd-intel8x0m
       sudo slmodemd -c MEXICO --alsa modem:1
reporting dynamic creation of ports:
       /dev/ttySL0 --> /dev/pts/N   , with N some number
Read Smartlink.txt and Modem/YourSystem.txt for follow through guidance.

Run twice:
$ ./scanModem test 8086:24d6 1179:0001
It will output some files you may not yet have.
In particular read the Smartlink.txt.

However these tests indicate you may encounter a problem
--- Bootup diagnositcs for card in PCI slot 0000:00:1f.6 ----
[4294668.651000] ACPI: PCI Interrupt 0000:00:1f.6[B] -> GSI 17 (level,
low) -> IRQ 185
[4294668.651000] ACPI: PCI interrupt for device 0000:00:1f.6 disabled

if so you will have to try the options in Bootup.txt
