Any HDA controller can host a variety of different softmodem chips.In your case it is definitely a Conexant chip needing the hsfmodem software
The modem drivers do indeed use code from ALSA.
The configure line you used (if complete below)  is not adequate: ./configure --with-oss=yes--with-cards=intel8x0m,intel8x0,hda-intel,atiixp-modem,riptide
You need (I think ) to also specify the HEADERS PATHSee the ALSA docs.  I recommend
$ HEADERS=/usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.18-4-686$ ./configure --with-kernel=$HEADERS   --with-build=$HEADERS --with-cards=hda-intel
for an HDA modem, you shouldn't need any other driverssnd-intel8x0m and snd-atiixp-modem drivers are only effectve for AC'97modem cards, not HDA card types.
