Your System CPU=i686, Ubuntu 6.10, Linux version 2.6.17-10-generichas a AC'97 Modem Controller Primary PCI_id 8086:24c6 Subsystem PCI_id 14e4:4d64 , 14e4 is an ALSA compatible identification from Archives: BCM64, a Broadcom type.
Download from http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/packages/smartlink/ the package SLMODEMD.gcc4.1.tar.gz having a compiled slmodemd. Unpackunder Linux with: $ tar zxf SLMODEMD.gcc4.1.tar.gzreleaseing a folder SLMODEMD.gcc4.1/ Read instructions therein. But briefly, the modem driver should beunloaded and reloaded with: sudo modprobe -r snd-intel8x0m sudo modprobe snd-intel8x0mThen try a modem setup with command: sudo slmodemd -c ITALY --alsa modem:1 reporting dynamic creation of ports: /dev/ttySL0 --> /dev/pts/N , with N some number
If there is a successful: /dev/ttySL0 --> /dev/pts/NOpen another console and:$ sudo wvdialconf /etc/wvdial.confshould find the modem. Do an edit with:$ sudo gedit /etc/wvdial.conffollowing the guidance in the wvdial.txt Note that for ITALY, an X3may be necessary within the line Init2 = ATQ0 V1 E1 X3 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0if dialtone detection is not effective.
If all is OK, you should then be able to dialout with:$ sudo wvdial
Report back if you have problems.
