Thanks for your anwer.

I tried with smartlink for Microlink 56k Fun USB.

My commands:
:~$ sudo -s
Password:
root@yollywau-laptop:~# mknod -m 600 /dev/slusb0 c 243 0
root@yollywau-laptop:~# modprobe slusb
root@yollywau-laptop:~# slmodemd -c GERMANY /dev/slusb0

symbolic link `/dev/ttySL0' -> `/dev/pts/2' created.
modem `slusb0' created. TTY is `/dev/pts/2'
Use `/dev/ttySL0' as modem device, Ctrl+C for termination.

I did sudo wvdial.conf /etc/wvdial.conf, after I
left slmodemd. I have executed sudo wvdialconf in an other
console.
But there was no success.

I downloaded slmodem-2.9.11-20061021.tar.gz of http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/packages/smartlink/

May be, I did something wrong, when I installed and deinstalled from linuxant.com
hsfmodem_7.47.00.07full_i386.deb for the PCI-Modem.
This driver needs at least kernel 2.16.
I installed this driver, and it has overwritten some files. Perhaps, that is bad???
I don´t remember the files...

Marv only,

Could you please generate the tgz file for kernel 2.6.15-26.386 so that I could add it in Ubuntu/slamr.tar ?

Renate,

I have meanwhile checked with the manufacturer of your modem (Devolo) that the current series are indeed built with a SmartLink chipset, after having discovered that earlier versions used a Conexant HCF chipset unsupported for USB modems under Linux.

So if I understand correctly:

1-you have downloaded and successfully installed (with no error message), the driver file slmodem-2.9.11-20061021 but where have you taken it from?

2-you have given the very strange command quoted from your mail below:
modprobe slusb - slmodemd -c GERMANY -d /dev/slusb
in place of the three following separate commands
sudo mknod -m 600 /dev/slusb0 c 243 0
sudo modprobe slusb
sudo slmodemd -c GERMANY /dev/slusb0
of which the first is needed only if ls -l /dev/slusb0 does not find such a file. Your two commands in one line, separated by a - , are understood by Linux as one command only and certainly generates a mess. In addition, in the slmodemd command, the -d is at least useless, and the device is /dev/slusb0 with a trailing ZERO and NOT just slusb.

3-you have started wvdial after editing /etc/wvdial.conf but now three questions:
a-have you executed sudo wvdialconf /etc/wvdial.conf at all?
b-if yes, did you do that after having stopped slmodemd , or did you leave slmodemd and have executed sudo wvdialconf in an other console/window/xterm, which is absolutely necessary? c-repeat question b for starting wvdial after edition of /etc/wvdial.conf, and remember that the right command is sudo wvdial.
