Yes. We have VLC installed by default, so we'd like to use that if possible. We don't use gstreamer, but if the VLC backend is not working then we'll have to consider it or just not having embedded video support. I'm part of a group that develops a small Linux distribution so size is a concern.

I assume you did this on Linux?
The motivation for the vcl backend was primarily for Windows, where
there is no equivalent of gstreamer (some OS-level building block that
provides you with codecs). When I tried it last year, actually it was
the only avmedia backend that worked for me on Windows, but perhaps
something regressed since then.
