[LARTC] Maximum delay

Linux Advanced Routing and Traffic Control

Hello...
I'm working in a network with a very slow internet access.

I need to ask about the maximum delay

What is the default setting of the typical server/application, before a given
packet are timed out? Especially for http, ftp and IRC (dalnet).

I need to know, how long can a packet to be queued, or it's better to be
dropped, because it has been timed out by the receiver sever or application.

I'm afraid, If I drop a packet too fast, I'm forcing a "retry".
Also, If I queue packet too long, maybe the packet will be doubled, since the
application has sent a retry request. Even worst, the "retried packet" are
also timed out. So, there will be two unused packet in the queue.

Thank you in advance

Adi Nugroho
