needs help to choise right version of qemu and linux kernel

Hello.
I need to host is about 50 vm on phisical server, each vm need to able
to create snapshot of it hard drive to backup server and live migrate
to another server..
What version of kernel and qemu i need to use? What is the best stable
version ofr kernel? (i'm interesting vanilla kernels from kernel.org)
What file format for vm in case of using with qemu i need to use?
qcow2, qed or something else?
How stable sheepdog ? Does it support snapshoting?
