Dirk, sometimes when windows detects new hardware on a write-protected image, it needs to reinstall it on boot. For USB controllers this is usually on a 10-15 minute cycle. It may use a similar service startup cycle for audio hardware. Is your Vista image in 'snapshot=off' mode?
