OpenServer image console issues

I have a raw hard drive image of an old OpenServer server and can't quite get it to run. The whole original drive was saved as a single file, and started with:
  qemu-kvm -m 512 -hda opensvr.img
and various options I tried to address the problem.

Details:
As shown, the system comes to the "boot:" prompt, when the keyboard is functional. On ENTER the boot proceeds until the prompt:
Enter root password for maintenance or control-d for normal boot
At that point the keyboard is ignored. I tried entering the cntl-d with the sendkey command, that failed as well.

If started using the -vnc option, boot proceeds until a character graphic login is displayed asking for user and password. Again the keyboard is ignored.

Any thoughts to getting this working would be very useful!
